Pe is one of the leading co-founders of an amateur Thai football team in South Australia. He admits starting a team wasn't easy: kits, ground hire, referees and registration add up to more than $5,000 a year, part of it supported by the state and by the local Thai association. But what the team gets back is worth more than money. He says the kids have taken up sport and come out to train instead of gaming at home, and many adults who used to know each other only by sight now meet often, talk, share their troubles and help each other through hard times. The cheer squad of parents and newly arrived Thais follow the matches, get to know everyone, and end up helping the Thai association too. To anyone who hesitates because they can't really play, he says there's no need to feel shy: once you're together, it's more than football. It's friendship and the solidarity of a Thai community far from home.
