Fai is a volunteer committee member with a Thai association in South Australia that has run Adelaide's annual Thai Festival for several years. Last year the team built the event around a 'Thai temple-fair' theme, Siam Carnival, opening for a full day into the evening for the first time, with music, games, food stalls and activities, as if they had lifted a temple fair straight from Thailand into the middle of the city. She says she wanted Thais from within the state and interstate to bring their families and friends along, almost like taking everyone back to their childhood memories. For Thais living far from home, an event like this is more than entertainment. It is a place to see familiar faces, catch the scent of home, and share Thai culture with their children and Australian friends. Each festival depends on many volunteers who give their time wholeheartedly, believing that when the Thai community gathers, its bonds grow stronger.
