My pay nearly doubled, yet it still isn't enough in Adelaide
Story
Takeaway

My pay nearly doubled, yet it still isn't enough in Adelaide
Khun Art, a Thai mechanic who has worked in Adelaide for several years, says the cost of living has climbed alarmingly. He puts it bluntly: these days his salary really has gone up — almost double — but everything has shot up more than double. Rent alone eats about $400 a week, roughly a third of his income, and with petrol, power and food all rising together, what he used to save has nearly vanished. Instead of giving up, he tackled his expenses one at a time: he gave up eating out — a small joy he used to love — and cooked at home, and before every fill-up he opens an app to find the cheapest petrol nearby. He tightened how he lived without piling on extra hours until he burned out. His conclusion: Adelaide isn't as cheap as many assume, but with a plan and a clear picture of where the money leaks, you can still keep your footing.
Takeaway: When prices rise faster than wages, knowing where your money leaks matters more than just earning more. Track spending, cut non-essentials, and use SA fuel-comparison apps (like Fuel Price SA). If debts become overwhelming, call a free financial counsellor at the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.
