Three Thais — one who has lived here for over 10 years, one who moved from England, and one who has been here more than 30 years — all told the same story: at first, making friends with foreigners was hard because of the language barrier, shyness, and the Aussie socialising culture tied to drinking and going out, where if you don't join in, you kind of drop out of the group on your own. What everyone said really works: join a club or an activity you like, do volunteer work, go to the gym, talk to coworkers and to the parents of your children's friends, be brave enough to start a conversation even if your language isn't perfect, and give relationships time — friendships here grow gradually from meeting again and again.
