One Thai family had lived in Australia for over ten years on student visas. The eldest sister had nearly secured a skilled sponsorship, but the café that was to sponsor her closed down while the application was pending, causing her visa to be refused and her appeals to keep failing. An agent then advised filing an asylum visa (protection visa) to 'buy time,' hoping the child who was born and raised here would reach the full 10 years and gain PR rights. But the application was refused within about two months, and in early 2026 the whole family was ordered to leave the country within 28 days, with no further right to apply for a visa through normal channels. The program also warned about certain agents who collect tens of thousands of dollars along with exaggerated promises, then become uncontactable once the case is refused.
