I bought a car — so what do I need to do?
I bought a car — so what do I need to do?
Takeaway: I asked friends who had bought a car before what I needed to do.
1. Register the car (rego). You get this document when you buy the car — the previous owner gives it to you. For the price at the bottom, you can write whatever amount you want. Say you bought the car for 5,000; if you write 3,000, you'll pay a bit less in registration fees. The previous owner recommended this. The rego has to be done at Service SA — it's like notifying them that this car is now going to be mine. Rego can be paid every 3 months or annually; for the 3-month one, if you forget to pay, you get fined — they scan your plate and mail a letter to your home. The price depends on the car's condition and the price you bought it for. Once the rego is done, they'll mail a letter to your home in about a week.
2. Get insurance. There are online ones. The insurance price depends on which tier you choose, and there's a question about when you drive most often; if you use the car during peak times, the insurance might be a bit more expensive.
3. Once you sell the car, don't forget to cancel the insurance and cancel the rego (you can do it online) — because if you forget to cancel it and the new owner crashes the car you used to have, you could be in trouble and have to take responsibility.
4. If you get hit by someone, take a photo of the driver's license of the person who hit you. Then the person who hit you deals with their insurer, and their insurer calls you to ask which repair shops you can go to, and you take the car to a shop accordingly. If you have a driver's license issued in SA, they'll give you a car to use while yours is being repaired — but that probably depends on which insurance tier you have.
